About the Comic
Beneath the looming shadow of war, a struggling empire, desperate to win at any cost, sends a scientific team to a remote planet where they proceed to create a new type of soldier, one that could not only defeat their enemies, but change the fate of the universe as well. Beliefs will be challenged, sides will be taken, and nothing will ever be the same.
Beyond Fire is a sci-fi/fantasy comic that asks all of the difficult questions. What does it mean to be sentient? How do drastically different species relate to each other? Is it possible to get along?
The comic and the universe that it’s set in is based on a conglomeration of myths, legends, conspiracy theories, historical facts, religious texts, biology, alien abduction stories, quantum physics, and whatever else out there leaves more questions than answers. You will definitely see the aliens we all know and love, greylings and lizard-people and whatnot, but they have a small part to play here.
Since I am just starting up, I can’t say for sure how often I can update. However, I’m going to try my best to have the new pages up by Monday night.
Beyond the Comic:
Beyond Fire is actually a small segment of a universe that’s been growing in my head since…well…forever. Technically this comic is the origin story to a novel series that I have been working on for the last couple of years. Beyond Fire won’t spoil the novels in any way, in fact if all goes well, it should serve as a great introduction into the Universe. Speaking of the Universe….
The Universe is huge. I should know, I have a whole OneNote folder dedicated to it, (aspiring creators take note, OneNote can be your best friend). However, I’m not going to be posting anything in the Universe pages until we get further along in the story.
About the Author
Hi everyone! First of all, thanks for checking out my webcomic! My name is Alex Winkler and I don’t normally make comics…yeah. I’m currently majoring in creative writing and have been writing stories since I was around ten or eleven. Drawing and sketching isn’t anything new to me (I have a horrible habit of doodling in class), and I’ve played with GIMP here and there, but I never took a serious interest in digital art until last year when I finally got my hands on a tablet and Adobe Photoshop.
Aside from drawing and writing, I’m also really into Biology and Linguistics, which not only influences my work a lot, but makes it really hard to figure out what I want to do with my life.
I currently live in Brooklyn with my boyfriend, one cat, and one wookie-cat hybrid.
But Why a Webcomic?
In short, the story itself is very visual. Whenever I try to think of it in terms of a novelized story, it always comes at me in a barrage of image and color rather than the usual stream of sentences and descriptions.
There are a lot of personal reasons why I chose to start this project too; the most prevalent being that I really wanted to work on my skill as a story-teller. In my writing, I have this tendency to try to make things perfect, and I constantly obsess over details. As a result, I always have a hard time finishing a project because I spend so much time looking back rather than moving forward. Part of the appeal of making the comic public as that you can’t really go back and focus on editing when you have a public audience counting on you for the next page.
I’d also really like to improve my artistic skills. As I’ve said before, I don’t really consider myself to be an artist. I like to draw, sure, but I never had the chance to cultivate it as much as I should have. This probably means I’ll be playing around a lot with style, so expect me to try new things every now and then.
So overall, this project is a learning experience. Hopefully you’re willing to go on this crazy journey with me, wherever ends up leading.
